Projects

Greenhouse Project

On 3.2.11 the wind huffed and puffed and took my plastic greenhouse and planted it into next doors garden, the poles were bent and broken and there was no way I could put it back together again, so time to build something more substantial?

So I endeavoured to build it with a much recycled materials as possible.  I started collecting pallets from my husbands work place, only the damaged ones that were going to be scrapped honest!
I cleared a corner site in the garden and laid down 4 pallets as a base on top of a weed suppressant sheet.
With some bought timber I laid a square frame down and middle struts and screwed it all down to the pallets.

I made up the four walls with a door at one end, used the plastic from the old greenhouse as windows and put it all together........ how I hear you ask?
YES by myself..... and YES it nearly killed me!!!

Had trouble finding more pallets so unfortunately had to buy more timber to get the floor laid, and then put corrugated plastic across the roof, not very strong but will do for now until I come up with a better idea.

At last, my other half helped my carried grow bags inside, really I think he just came into the garden (where he never ventures) to be nosey and slate my hard work, but he was very quiet, must have been impressed!
I put in some shelving and et voila!

Hennies Hospital

What with my experience of the chooks either being ill or being picked on means they sometimes need isolation and Ive nowhere to put them.  At the moment I've had to put them in the cat carrier in the kitchen at night and then into the plastic Green House during the day (which is not secure), so I have decided to build my own little simple coop, which will be named Hennies Hospital.

6.1.11 Found a pallet outside a local pub on the way to farm shop.
8.1.11 Found x2 more pallets on a local industrial estate.
10.1.11 Bought tools today: workbench, pin hinges, crowbar, wood glue, bar clamps, planer file.
Let the work begin! Have drawn up plans, ready to go.
12.1.11 Put the workbench together this afternoon. Glued together x5 planks of wood to make up the base. Used bar clamps to squeeze together and set glue. Left to dry overnight.
16.1.11 Planed and sanded base. Continued to deplank pallets and cut to size.
Made up left side.
17.1.11 Collected x2 more pallets from other half's work. Stripped 1 down, denailed and sanded smooth. Ordered mesh and jigsaw from Screwfix. Will collect tomorrow.
18.1.11 Collected from Screwfix.  Whilst driving home past gold club saw tree surgeons cutting, got a log for perches. Made up right side and prepped back planks.
19.1.11 Finished off back board and stripped another pallet. Cut plans for front board, picked up a plywood pallet.
23.1.11 Other half went to bed but said I could make noise, he slept all the way through it :) Made real progress on coop, almost finished!
24.1.11 Started on run today, hopefully will get it finished by tonight.
25.1.11 Finished coop, put girls inside. Finished run, need to secure in the morning!
26.1.11 Secured run to coop.

Girls look happy, think they had a good night.
